Series 24: Laura Baird

"Jonestown Carpet has been described by two critics as "a work of prolonged commitment" or "a maniacally obsessive, fascinating and hopeless act of purification." As the artist responsible, I am not sure which of these descriptions I prefer. My practice centers on those aspects of being that I find most compelling. My choice in subject matter has reflected an abiding interest in sex and death". ~ Laura Baird

Series 22: Barbara Shumiatcher

"Painters of Paris"
Why do we associate with the very name of Paris, the image of the artist, probably living in a garret, and ready to devote himself at any cost to his vision? What’s the connection?
That is the question I had to explore as I wrote a little book about the city for two teenage friends. The first thing I recognized was that, in the late 1800s, a handful of painters turned the Paris art scene into a real roller-coaster.
Every few years they made a revolution in art. Critics for the most part reacted strongly in the negative, The art survived - and indeed, it changed how we see the world.
At Keiko’s invitation, we will look at the first chapter of this book, introduce a few of the Impressionists, and trace the start of a thrilling story:
how Paris formed these students in art, brought many of them together in friendship; and how in her studios, garrets, theatres, cafes and streets, they found their ways to see the world and to portray it anew. ~ by Barbara~
