AIR Series 122:Alcvin Ryūzen Ramos & Alison Nishihara
Musical Bridging of East and West
ALAL is a unique collaboration between classical pianist Alison Nishihara and shakuhachi master, Alcvin Ryūzen Ramos. They explore the harmonious meshing of Japanese and western classical music through the filter of experimentation with a special attraction to pieces expressing melancholy, yearning, love of nature, romance, and the pathos of life. Brought together by their mutual love of music, their duo name Alal is the merging of both of the first letters of their names which synchronistically is the name of goddess of love, who is celebrated in Iran and other parts of the Middle East.
Biographies:
Alison Nishihara
Classically-trained pianist, Alison Nishihara, has performed in various productions and events in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Since the mid-nineties, she has been exploring non-traditional approaches to some of the classical piano, instrumental and vocal repertoires. Working in small chamber ensembles, collaborating with contemporary dancers, and duetting with vocalists, she strives to explore different aspects of the music through non-traditional lenses - through arrangements, adaptations and non-standard instrumentation. She is excited to continue these explorations through her work with Alcvin Ramos, as part of the new duo, Alal.
Alcvin Ryūzen Ramos
Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos is one of the leading teachers and performers of the shakuhachi in North America. Born and trained in Japan in the classical zen shakuhachi tradition, Alcvin is a genre-bridging artist who is also a composer and multi-instrumentalist (shamisen, shinobue, taiko). Alcvin is also a recording artist with several CDs of traditional and contemporary music to his name. He has performed nationally and internationally, and has shared the stage with many distinguished musicians and artists of various disciplines including dance, theatre, painting, poetry, sculpture, and fashion. Alcvin lives on the Sunshine Coast of BC where he makes shakuhachi flutes and teaches at his home at the Bamboo-In Retreat Centre.
