Doug concluded his talk with some reflections on business coarching and personal learning. It was a fascinating and uplifting evening!

Series 13: Graham Good, Ph.D. l "CREATIVE PROCESS"
April 8, 2011
Graham discussed the process of developing a personal vision through drawing and painting (and meditating at the same time!). His aim is to discover, articulate, and focus on the aspect of the subject that seems most significant to him, and to dramatize that by selective emphasis. He demonstrated, for human figure drawing, how both sides of the brain are used and synchronized for more creatively drawing. His style of an intuitive and highly emotional expression was evident in his landscape and figurative works, a combination of abstraction and realism. We were challenged and entertained by his enquiring mind!

Ann Marie Fleming is an independent filmmaker whose works often deal with themes of family, history and memory. Ann Marie showed her latest film “I was a child of holocaust survivors"(which just won best animation from a youth jury for the youth film festival in vancouver. Brava!!!), an animated adaptation from the illustrated memoir by Bernice Eisenstein, and parts of "The magical life of long tack Sam (http://www.longtacksam.com/)", her documentary on her great grandfather who was a traveling vaudevillian acrobat and magician, which she turned in to a graphic novel. She candidly shared her thoughts on the challenges of adapting works from film to the page, and from print to time based media........OK, now recap. This is what really happened tonight. As you see in the video clip, we had a bit of technological nightmare causing the unnecessary delay.....On top, in betweens or on the side, seven kids were stuck in an elevator frantic for 15 minutes and sobbing in relief for being rescued.....The upside? We all were more enchanted and bonded anew! Our kids have now a healthy respect for elevators!! AMF did great talk anyway. Hope everyone go rent the Long Tack Sam to see the rest!

Series 10: Michael Silverman, Ph.D. l
"The Machine in the Ghost: A cell biological view of the life and death of neurons"
Feb 11, 2011
Michael, a neuroscientist at SFU (www.silvermanlab.org), discussed how nerve cells work, develop, and then degenerate in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. I can't tell you how pleased I was, both as an organizer and as an audience, with his extraordinary efforts. And there was the pleasure of seeing a skilled teacher use his subtle wit and years of fascinating research to 'entertain' and educate us in neurosciences. Lecturing to a room of 12 adults with different backgrounds and interests, he managed to answer all our questions and provide great insight (and YOU know how hard THAT can be) for almost two full hours. Job well done! I hope he will do it again!
